Just Around the Riverbend

We’re nearly there. The new look is here and we’ve moved to the new server. Thanks Media Temple!

The only thing I’m waiting for is our new content delivery network (CDN) – you know, that thing that puts all of your content all over the world so that everyone experiences a quicker site load time – to start mirroring our content. That should be a couple of days. You shouldn’t notice any negative impact in the meantime.

But until then…enjoy the new look!

P.S. – If you’re interested in advertising, we’ve got a few new places on the site to put your ad! For more info, start on the advertising page.

UPDATE: (8:00 AM PT) – It looks like the CDN has taken a liking to the site. I hope that everything loads tons faster for everybody and looks like it should. If you see an anomalies, please don’t hesitate to let me know on the contact form.

Long Overdue Changes

Greetings all. I’m sorry if you’ve noticed some downtime and other weirdness going on at the site over the last few days. I’m trying to work through all of it and give us an upgrade. Needless to say, I’m burnt out and frustrated with all of the crap that has been dealt to the site. I couldn’t stand the lack of responses or completely inadequate responses that we did receive about issues that were out of our control.

Anyway, I’m combining a change of hosting server and much-anticipated new look into this horrendous process. You should be able to see some of the new look at this point but you probably can’t see any of the photos included in articles. I’m hoping that worst case scenario for the ugliness is only through the end of Tuesday (April 24).

I’ll try to keep everyone posted with what’s going on when I can. I’ll be visiting my with my doc tomorrow for my pre-surgery appointment. One week and counting…

SAY WHAAAAT?!  That’s right, it’s coming soon, a fresh re-design of the website!

Fox and I have decided that it’s time for a new backend build and a fresh face to the JOL site, so we’re planning a roll out once the Fox Family returns to the Fox Den!  Stay tuned, we’re going to have to pull the site down for one day coming up soon, but we’ll announce ahead of time.  It’s time for some fresh code to go with all of the traffic increases we keep experiencing!  The JimOnLight Community kicks some serious ass!

We’ve had all kinds of interest in advertising on the website, and we welcome your company to send us an email to see if you’re the right fit for the JimOnLight readership base.  We’re also rolling out an RSS Feed Sponsorship program, and this week’s RSS Feed Sponsor is the ever-glorious Source Four LED!  I can’t wait to actually get my hands on one, the last few trade shows I have been too busy to really get away from the booth for specifics, just general floor coverage.

Check this out:

We’d also like to shout a HUGE THANK YOU to our current advertisers – InLight Gobos, SeaChanger from Ocean Thin FilmsProduction Resource Group (PRG), and Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC)!  You guys make this all possible, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The Website Is Down

Well, it’s not down anymore…

A big thank you to everyone for your patience last night. We moved the site over to a new server and it went very well! There was minimal downtime, depending on what region you are in, it should have been no more than a few hours.

If you are still experiencing any issues or notice anything abnormal, please drop Fox a line at

And if you’ve never experienced the wonderment that is The Website Is Down, go check it out. You will then have further insight into half of my world!

A Big Community Welcome to Some Absolutely Awesome People

I have made some changes lately to the way things are done here at and Light Associated Media, LLC.

I have been so busy doing all of the stuff that prevents me from writing like I used to be able to write – I miss the sheer volume of time I used to be able to spend just researching and writing!  I’m sick and tired of not being able to do that, so I have reached out into the Community to get some help with the day-to-day operation of and the Light Associated Media Network (,, and the Newsletter – YEAH!  We do a newsletter, too!)

As you already know, Jax Steager from San Francisco functions as the Executive Assistant, helping me at conventions and conferences, and generally helps me keep my stuff together.  Jax also writes on from time to time – we’ll be seeing her a lot more in the coming months.

I’ve also started to put together a Executive Advisory Board.  The first member that has accepted is Rick Hutton from InLight Gobos – Rick is a close friend, and his feet are rooted in this industry from the bottom up.  Rick is a valuable resource as a friend and as someone tied into the industry.  I asked him for technical advisory, and to spearhead the board.

The latest member of the Team is the fantastic Mr. David Fox, Day Crew on Cirque du Soleil’s KÀ in Las Vegas, as well as a smart dude and developer (pictured on the left with Jim and Erik Walstad from KA).  David is going to become the Chief Web Strategist for  We’ve been very fortunate to have Leia Scofield developing for several years – Leia is one of the best web developers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, if not one of the best in the South.  Leia’s still doing development for, but we’re trying to move stuff over to David to lighten Leia’s load.  I’m so fortunate to have Leia’s expertise on the site!  I’m also glad to now have David’s input on the site!

More coming soon – please join me in saying HEY HI! to the new people, and to Jax! is about to Hit ONE MILLION PAGEVIEWS!

Ladies and gentlemen – people of light all over the world, I want to say thank you to each and every one of you. is about to breach ONE MILLION PAGEVIEWS in the next seven days, according to my calculations!  That means that is one of the most read blogs on light on the planet.  I hope that you are all as excited as I am that our website has made such an impact on the world of light.  Each and every one of you are to thank for this achievment.

In lieu of this milestone for me, it’s FREE STUFF GIVEAWAY TIME!!!  Stay tuned this week, a contest is in the works!’s Top 20 of 2009

Moving to A Private Server! Excuse the Downtime Tonight, If Any

JimOnLight has grown to the point where we’re trying to find better ways to make the site perform better.  Tonight, we’re moving the site over to a private server to see if performance issues improve this evening.  Thank you for reading so much that we have to make changes like that!

While we’re moving the site over to the private server tonight, we might have some times where the site is either flaky, or not loading at all.  Please excuse the inconvenience, we’re trying to make the site faster and rock harder.  Maybe in the same fashion as that of a hurricaaaaane. readers ROCK!

Outages and RSS Feed Summaries and The Amazon Cloud, Oh My!

I don’t know if you’ve noticed lately, but we’ve had a few issues with our hosting company lately.  Users have been reporting “500 errors” (which means that the server is having some issues), and has been experiencing little bits of downtime over the last month or so.

First of all, I am really sorry about that!
Second, we are doing all kinds of innovative things here at to make sure that this crap stops happening!

There’s so much awesome traffic on the website that we’ve begun to find new ways to make reading as fast as possible, and with quick response.  As of today, we moved our image files from the shared server at our hosting company to Amazon’s S3 cloud – we’re expecting this move to make all kinds of fantastic improvements in the performance of the website!

Until we figure out why the server has been performing so badly lately, we have to make a few very temporary adjustments to the RSS feed for  For a little bit we have to reduce the RSS feed to the first 300 characters with no images.  I am sorry about that, and we will fix it as soon as we analyze the server logs and figure out the problem.  Come visit the site though, I love having you there.

Thank you for visiting the website so much!  I am honored that you all come to read!
