The Daily Lamp – Full-Size Human Lamps from Al Hamad Design

Today’s Daily Lamp is a pretty awesome (at least to me!) selection of actual human-sized mannequin lamps from Al Hamad Design in Kuwait — and when I say actual human-sized, I mean that the lamp is a standing version of a person with a lampshade where there should be a head.  Oh, and to turn the lamp on?  You shake its hand.  Check it out:

From the Al Hamad Design website on Embarakiya, the line’s name:

Embarakiya are human floor lamps dressed in traditional Kuwaiti wardrobe.  The lamp shades are upholstered in the actual fabric of the headdress.  Each of these lamps features a touch sensor in the hand with three dimmer settings.  Shake hands and the lamp will turn on.  The men include a built-in speaker in the torso.

Well I sure the hell have never seen anything like this before!  Embarakiya lamps have a fiberglass body, real fabric covering, and have cultural significance as they’re modeled on Kuwaiti clothing.  There’s a standing man lamp, a standing woman lamp, a woman lamp sitting, and a standing child lamp.  This is certainly different than any lamp I’ve ever seen!

I’ve read nothing but article after article on these lamps that says they’re creepy.  Do you agree?  I think they’re awesome!

A Light-Up Tony Stark Shirt Arc Reactor Shirt?!

I hate to admit this, but I thought those crazy Iron Man movies…  WERE AWESOME!!!!

Ok, maybe the second more than the first, but seriously — mindless explosions, glowing stuff, and a plot line that’s looser than most of my high school girlfriends?  How could you POSSIBLY go wrong?!

I saw this over at ThinkGeek the other day and I nearly lost control of my bladder — this is almost as cool as that glowing EQ shirt I saw back in Vegas last year!  Meet the illuminated Tony Stark shirt from ThinkGeek!  Frankly, it’s an awesome deal at $22.  You bet your ass I ordered one!

But soft — there are informations about the shirt that little Stark wannabe Iron Men should heed!  From the ThinkGeek page:

  • Officially licensed Marvel collectible
  • Black cotton t-shirt containing a light-up Arc Reactor
  • Looks like a standard t-shirt, but it’s actually the Iron Man Mark IX suit
  • Flexible interior with knitted cotton exterior
  • Provides protection from adverse weather, UV rays, and temperature extremes
  • With fresh batteries in the battery box, Arc Reactor will glow when switched on
  • Will not prevent shrapnel from reaching your heart
  • Machine washable (all electrical components can be removed from the shirt)
  • Requires 3 AAA batteries (not included)

I LOVE THIS!  Just remember:  this WILL NOT PREVENT SHRAPNEL from reaching your HEART!

Nieuwe Heren’s Aegis Parka Warns You about Pollution with Light

Dutch designers Nieuwe Heren make another appearance on!  You might remember them from their very cool Deconstructed Floodlight about a year ago.

Meet the Aegis Parka — a jacket that lights up to warn you about polluted areas in real time.  It reminds me of the movie Cherry 2000 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome all rolled into one crazy looking piece of clothing:

It detects toxins in the air, offers oxygen, and features a very durable ceramic scaly fabric that is supposed to be pretty tough.  From the Nieuwe Heren website on the Aegis Parka:

Aegis: as stated in the Iliad, is the shield of Zeus, possessing great powers, forged by Hephaestus with a surface of gold like scaly snake-skin.

With Urban pollution growing out of hand, and lifespans diminishing due to airborne pollutants we felt the urge to design a jacket that counters those effects.

A sensor in the parka registers hazardous molecules and signals you of the intensity. The more Led’s illuminated the worse the air quality. A built in respirator with an active carbon filter helps you inhale fresh air.

Biking/walking through the city wearing this garment even contributes to the air quality, as the suit is treated with a TiO2 (titaniumdioxide) solution, which cleanses the air due to it’s photocatalystic properties.

The garment is created from schoeller®-Ceraspaceâ„¢, a scaly fabric created out of ceramic particles, making it far more abrasion and heat resistant then leather.

The inner lining consists of schoeller®-PCMâ„¢ a special textile containing millions of microcapsules filled with Phase Change Materials (PCM). They balance out temperatures which are too high or too low to achieve the wearer’s personal comfort climate.

Very cool!  Welcome back to JimOnLight, Nieuwe Heren!

LumiGram – High Tech Fashion and Decoration

I just read about LumiGram in a post on the Light Network – LumiGram is selling high-tech luminous clothing and custom decorations for your – uh – space age lifestyle.  This stuff is pretty cool.  I don’t know if the halter-top is really my look, thouhg, being as though I’m not terribly waife-thin and in possession of a sizzle-chest like some of the dudes in this really posh video on LumiGram’s website…
