Nine Inch Nails’ New Tour Design Pretty Much Nine Inch Kicks Ass

Do you know who Roy Bennett is?  Are you in the lighting industry?  Let me help you out here — go check out Roy Bennett, then come back here.  I’ll wait.

NIN

I wouldn’t say that I’m a NIN fan; but then again, I wouldn’t say that if one of their tunes came on the radio I would turn it off.  Nine Inch Nails has their place for me in the world, but then again I’m one of those trippy dippy jamband people who love the groove.  Call it what you will.  One thing is certain — Roy Bennett’s kick ass production and lighting design work for NIN is definitely just that:  kick ass.

Check out some great video of the pre-production, with those excellent mobile video panels — video put together by The Moment Factory:

NIN Festival Tour – Teaser from Moment Factory on Vimeo.

Then watch this — an AWE-SOME pre-production video of the rehearsals and interviews with tour staff:

Then, Nine Inch Nails fans, a video of the entire performance at the Lowlands Festival in the Netherlands. Here’s the setlist, followed by the video!

A Short LDI Walkthrough

Happy Tuesday morning, everyone!

I put together this short LDI walkthrough for those who weren’t there – it’s only 3 minutes and it’s not all-inclusive, but I think you’ll dig it anyway.  There’s nothing political, nothing about war, nothing about the Presidential election — it’s just pure light enjoyment!  Check it out!

U2’s 360° Tour – Video

@aronaltmark on Twitter pointed this out to me – a fairly lengthy video of some of U2’s latest tour, the 360° Tour, which is in the round featuring a ginormous 360° video screen.  Very cool, check it out – it is 10 minutes, FYI.  Thanks, Aron!

Umphrey’s McGee’s LD Jeff Waful is Someone to Watch

The jamband Umphrey’s McGee underwent a change in lighting designers in the last 9-10 months, from Adam Budney to Jeff Waful.  Adam has moved on to pursue other interests, and Jeff has taken on the task of lighting Umphrey’s.  Music mag Glide Magazine’s Hidden Track section posted some images of their performance at NYC’s Nokia Theatre a little while ago – I’m just catching up on a whole bunch of stuff after my month-long trip to Columbus – these shots are great.  I’d watch for Jeff Waful – his stuff is looking interesting.

Phish (and Chris Kuroda) is Touring

As much as I am sad about not going to see Phish again this summer, Sweden is much more important.  I have been checking out what Chris Kuroda has been doing so far this summer, and I’ve been digging it.  Here’s a few videos to start your day – if you don’t like Phish, enjoy the lighting!  Some of this stuff is steady, and some of it is shaky, a la Blair Witch.

PHISH RETURNS

That’s right folks, my beloved favorite band, Phish, is returning for a series of three shows at Hampton Coliseum in March.  We signed up to get reserve tickets for all three nights, so let’s hope that we’re successful!

Look for more information in the coming months – even lighting designers have their favorite shows – the ones where we can stop saying “oh hey look, a Vari*Lite 3500 series” and just rock and roll.

In celebration:  a video of the hottest jam of my favorite tune, “Reba.”  New Years Eve, 1995.  Enjoy.
