LightFair 2012 Speaker Registration is OPEN!

Are you planning on attending the LightFair 2012 in Las Vegas, May of 2012? Are you planning on trying to submit a speaking event or class or something in the form of a presentation to LightFair 2012?

WELL GUESS WHAT?!  The CALL FOR SPEAKER REGISTRATION IS OPEN!  To begin your submission, which needs to be in NO LATER than September 12, 2012, check out the LightFair Speaker Registration page!

Why am I excited?  Well, you bet your funny accent I’m submitting a proposal again this year!  More on that to follow.

Upcoming JimOnLight.com Appearances!

I’m doing a fair amount of traveling over the next handful of months – some guest artist appearances, some conference appearances, and maybe I’ll just go streaking across the quad somewhere in America!  LET’S GO STREAKING!

Ha, ha.  Moving on.

So tomorrow I’m having some surgery on my torn rotator cuff and shoulder injury – I’m going to be recovering for the next few weeks, so when you see me at USITT I might still be sore.  If you slap my right shoulder, I might punch your right face.  Don’t take it offensively though, it’ll just be a reaction to the pain, you know how it goes!  So I’ll be sitting on the couch, recovering, and generally watching a lot of Family Guy.  Send me some good juju today (Thursday, Feb. 23) around 230pm!

SETC 2011
I’ll be at the Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) in Atlanta, Georgia next week.  I’m the guest lighting designer judge for the 2011 Student Design Competition, which takes place Wednesday through Saturday, March 2-4, 2011.  After there, it’s on to Charlotte!

USITT 2011
I’m presenting on a panel at the United States Institute for Theatre Technologies (USITT) National Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina – March 9-12, 2011.  The panel, called Marketing in the Digital World and Social Media for the Lighting Professional, is with Andrea Bilkey from Texas Tech and Justin Lang from iSquint.net.  “It’s gonna be tight, y’all!”

LFI 2011
I’m going to be walking the floor at LightFair 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this year too!  I had such a great time at the 2010 LightFair Conference covering the floor that I want to get back this year and see what there is to be seen on the architectural lighting scene!  You see how I punned there?!

So, what do you think?  Spontaneous JimOnLight.com Tweetups in each and every one of these cities???  Let me know if you’re gonna be somewhere by dropping me a line on Twitter (@JimOnLight) or via the contact form.  If you know my cell, then send me a text!  I hope to see you all there!

Cree’s LMR-4 Modular LED

I have been so busy and accumulated so much content lately that I find myself playing catch up with some pretty great footage and images!

One such bunch of stuff is from LightFair 2010 in Las Vegas.  Tom Roberts gave me a pretty great introduction to Cree’s LMR-4 modular LED product.  I finally got the video cut together – check it out!  What a cool product!

And an update – Ginny from Cree made the following video about the LMR-4, which I recommend watching!

Patrick Woodroffe’s WYNN Hotel Lighting Design Photos

Peeps, I have so much content from LightFair 2010 that I am now getting to for your visual excitement – show floor, product reviews, interviews, photography, and general awesomesauce that’s up and coming in the next few days.  Las Vegas provides SO much good content!  Wait, is that an oxymoron?

This afternoon I have an excellent eye opener for you – hopefully that will blast you off into the day artistically! While in Las Vegas, everyone’s favorite luxess and JimOnLight.com’s official photog Amanda Lynne Ballard took some photos of the Wynn outdoor lighting garden attraction designed by Patrick Woodroffe and his team.  I really have nothing that I can possibly type that compares to the work she took, so here goes my shut mouth.  Enjoy!

A few favorites first, then an image gallery.  We got the image gallery set up so that you can comment on individual pictures now!

Thanks, Amanda Lynne!

LightFair Day One – What A Great Conference!

LightFair 2010 – have you SEEN so many LEDs in your life?!

I have to say I am having a TON of fun on the floor of LightFair 2010 – this is a conference I will be attending each year!  I walked around yesterday on the floor, meeting people, getting hugs from people, and generally having an excellent time.  One thing that I am super excited about is that I HAVE A REAL PHOTOGRAPHER shooting work for JimOnLight.com!  Everybody’s favorite Amanda Lynne Ballard is here, shooting pics and making me look GREAT!  You have to see some of the work she got for you all, and make sure to thank her.

Check out some photos of the showfloor – if you’ve not been to LightFair, you need to make plans!  This is a huge year for LightFair, most people ever!

“The Map”

WANT.  NOW.

Part of Cree LED’s booth – AWESOME!

Peter Kirkup showing how he nerds his iPad into controlling the Orb.  Awesome.

I love me some Peter Kirkup!  This kid is a GENIUS!

I also loves me some Ginny Skalski from Cree – she’s the Social Media voice of Cree LEDs!  What a rock star!

Green Man Walking

The biggest CFL I have ever seen.  Ever.

That’s right – OptiLEDs immersed in water.  How’s that for IP 68?

SeaChanger – in all if its greatness!

More OptiLED submersion

Finally – someone acknowledged Street Lighting!

Stay tuned – I’m here all week!  Lots more stuff to come.  I am very excited!

Jim’s at LightFair 2010 in Las Vegas

What a busy day!

  • see above picture
  • Interesting cab ride to the Sahara as my cabbie told me about all of the places off of the strip to see live fistfights
  • An elderly couple got into an argument while I was eating lunch, and the woman in the couple told the man that he “would rue the day” that he ever talked “like that” to her again
  • Saw someone win a thousand bucks at a slot machine
  • Old lady banged on my door shouting “Irving?  IRVING!  Let me in, I forgot to take my pills!”

Now it’s 12:30 Vegas time.  I wonder what’s in my near future?!

I’m in town for LightFair 2010 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.  I’ll be covering the floor for the next handful of days – and since the LightFair people have set up a free WIFI press area for those of us deemed as press (*ahem* USITT), I can post from the floor.  Tres Chic!  Thanks, Tara!

Stay tuned – more LightFair news coming.
