Luxim’s Light Emitting Plasma + A Hydrogen Fuel Cell = Win

More news out of our favorite high output lamp technology from Luxim – a hydrogen fuel cell paired with Luxim’s Light-Emitting Plasma technology made its appearance at a celebrity gathering lately, debuting the first mobile fuel cell powered entertainment lighting application.

FUEL CELL-POWERED MOBILE LIGHTING SYSTEM FEATURING LUXIM’S LIGHT EMITTING PLASMA TECHNOLOGY DEPLOYED AT ACADEMY AWARDS®

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Mar. 23, 2010—At the Academy Awards® ceremony held earlier this month, a new mobile lighting system incorporating Light Emitting Plasma™ (LEP) from LUXIM and a clean hydrogen fuel cell was deployed at the celebrity gathering, infusing the festivities with a brighter, cleaner sparkle.  The novel mobile unit was recently developed by a team of collaborators as a more efficient alternative to traditional technologies powered by diesel fuel generators.  In addition to LUXIM, the team consisted of Sandia National LaboratoriesThe Boeing Company, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Altergy SystemsMultiquip Inc., and others.

The use of the new system marks a major departure for this kind of high-intensity entertainment lighting application.  Up to now, mobile lighting units were powered by diesel fuel generators that produce carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and soot, making them less than ideal for the environment.  Before this technology arrived, mobile lighting units typically consumed 4.4 kilowatts.  The LEP system consumes only about 2.3 kilowatts for the same light output, a reduced power requirement that saves energy and increases the system duration (operational time between refills).

Luxim’s LIFI Technology – A Follow-Up with Tony McGettigan at Luxim

One of my favorite things about digging into our industries is the people and relationships I make through research and interviews.

I recently had an email chat with Tony McGettican at Luxim Corporation, the folks who are making the LIFI plasma lamp.  Their unique and innovative product is becoming widely spread across all of the lighting industries, and it’s been an exciting addition to the Entertainment industry.  Seachanger is using a LIFI lamp in their NEMO fixtures, Robe is using a LIFI lamp in their ROBIN moving heads, and as the industries realize the merits of plasma tech, we’ll see a lot more of that lamp in the very near future.

I asked Tony a few followup questions a few weeks ago, after having a great email interview with him earlier in the year.  I’ve been tracking their progress for a long time, and I will continue to do so.  Questions and answers are below:

JimOnLight.com:  The last time we talked, Luxim’s LIFI source was just grabbing footing in the Entertainment lighting market with a plasma-source for Robe’s ROBIN series moving head. Now, great companies like Seachanger are getting in on the action with a LIFI source in their NEMO CMYG fixture. Are there other entertainment ventures that Luxim is participating in to date?

Tony McGettigan @ Luxim: We are very pleased with the Robe and Seachanger programs.  Each has been recognized in the industry as ground breaking in terms of performance and innovation.  There are several exciting new projects in the pipeline that we will be able to share more on later in 2010. You may be aware that Robe won the Innovation Award at PLASA in London as well as the SIEL Award in Paris last year.  In addition, the SeaChanger Nemo won the 2009 LIGHTFAIR Innovation award in New York.

JOL: How has the LIFI technology changed or improved since gaining partnerships in the entertainment industry?

Tony @ Luxim: We entered this sector with market-leading color quality and lifetime.  Our focus is now on increasing brightness.  We are doing this in two ways:

  • By developing more efficient systems at the current wattages, AND
  • By adding higher-wattage product offerings to our line-up

JOL: Has Luxim seen a larger market share in the infrastructure and civil lighting markets since the release of the LIFI product?

Tony @ Luxim: Our technology is being adopted in all sorts of applications from aquariums to grow lighting to zoos.  In the infrastructure and general lighting markets we are gaining share as a high-illuminance complement to LED solutions.  Several of our customers have a strategy of using LEDs in general lighting applications up to 15000 lumens and using our technology where higher output is required. We have a customer in the US that already has secured orders from 5 different cities and municipalities.

JOL: There’s lots of news stories about new and innovative LIFI applications, from aquarium tank lighting to mobile lighting applications for the construction industry. Can you give some insight on the new projects in related industries that Luxim is pursuing?

Tony @ Luxim: Here are a couple of examples where the unique attributes of our technology are helping our customers deliver better lighting solutions.

  • In Aquariums, our source can deliver excellent color quality AND excellent penetration into the water.  This dramatically improves the visitor experience.  The fish show beautifully while plants and corals can thrive deep below the tank surface.

  • In grow lighting, our sources increase the “seeding rate” and show faster, more efficient early-stage growth than competitive sources on the market.

There are many more examples, but this gives a flavor.  The uniqueness of our light source is apparent at first sight.  In each of our applications, customers are harnessing some of the unique features to deliver a superior overall lighting solution.

Jim, these are very exciting times at LUXIM.  Light Emitting Plasma is gaining significant acceptance in the marketplace and we continue to improve upon our technology.

Martin Lighting and their Plasma Fixture

LIFI, plasma lamp, Luxim, Ceravision, and high CRI are all terms we’ve been hearing in the news lately.  The plasma lamp is the hottest thing since Pop Tarts, and I have heard a lot of buzz lately with the industries regarding this technology.

Martin Lighting is working on a plasma lamp based fixture too – the philosophy is why not take this wonderful efficient source and create a whole new moving light around it?  I got some information from Brad at Martin – check it out!

Martin is dedicated to producing the leading, most advanced plasma light on the market. Its advantages are many – greater performance, greater cost benefits, and a smaller environmental footprint – yet implementing a new technology in products without exhaustive research and stringent testing can have risky consequences.

Only through a thorough research process and substantial investment can plasma’s true potential be unlocked. Martin is leading this intensive effort, including development of advanced optical and cooling systems for optimized performance.

What are we showing at Prolight +Sound?
Martin is proud to be showing at PL+S a new type of high intensity plasma source. R&D has built a number of plasma-based concept fixtures housed in existing MAC designs, but let me emphasize that we are not showing a prototype of a new MAC using a plasma source but instead will be presenting a technology showcase. We have built products to support our research and development, as well as to test and prove the new technology in actual fixtures under real world conditions.

It is important to understand that retrofitting the plasma source in conventional HID fixtures will not deliver the true benefits of plasma. It appears that some other manufacturers are trying to do this in order to get something quickly to the market, but we do not believe in such short cuts.

Having said that, we should not forget to mention that we are indeed working on real plasma fixtures but without revealing what that will be.

We also realize that this type of technology needs to be thoroughly tested before it is released as a commercial product. Our R&D team has already spent lots of time on research and have come very far. This work has lifted us to a position where we now have solutions to the many challenges that plasma presents. This intensive effort will allow us to soon bring commercial products to the market.

With this plasma showcase, we also want to enhance everyone’s understanding about what this interesting technology can bring in terms of real value propositions.

What is a plasma light source?
You can say that a plasma light is a tiny (the lamp is less than 9 millimeters) discharge lamp without any electrodes. Instead of applying a voltage and drawing a current through the lamp, the energy comes via a high frequency RF transmitter. The RF waves heat the materials inside the lamp and bring those materials to a plasma state so that the lamp emits light. This different method of transforming electricity into light has multiple benefits over the conventional way it’s done in a discharge lamp.

What are the benefits?
The potential in the plasma light source is great and if this technology is applied to lighting fixtures in the right way, the benefits will be many. Some of the biggest are:

• Increased energy efficiency
• Greater light output
• Cooler, quieter fixtures
• Longer lamp life
• Compact for smaller fixture designs
• More uniform light output across rig
• More continuous color spectrum
• Near perfect CRI (95+)
• Better for the environment

The plasma source is efficient and very compact. This makes it work extremely efficiently in the optical system and the result is more light out of the fixture for the same power consumption.

With higher efficiency, the customer saves power, the fixture produces less heat, i.e. less A/C needed, and less fan cooling is required, which again means less noise and less dirt to clean out. Installation becomes easier and cheaper and money is saved on the power bill.

As a final note regarding efficiency, it is possible to dim the plasma lamp to very low levels, meaning that you further reduce power consumption when the light is dimmed.

Life and consistency
Lamp life of the plasma source is exceptional. Like LED and even HID sources, lamp life depends on how it is integrated, driven and cooled. We are already gaining a lot of know-how in this area, and you should expect to see fixtures with a lamp life of around 30,000 hours on full output! Although the initial cost of a plasma system is higher than HID, there is a very short payback time for the customer.

An additional benefit is that light output and color temperature is much more consistent over longer spans of time. This makes it a lot easier and cheaper to get 10 lights in the rig to all look the same.

Compactness
The plasma light source is very compact which means that we can produce more compact fixtures with greater performance than larger ones.

Color spectrum
The plasma lamp has a much more continuous color spectrum than an HID lamp. This can be seen and measured by a higher CRI, and some colors will appear more vibrant. People or objects that are illuminated will also appear better and in more authentic color tones.

Better for the environment
The high energy efficiency has potential for reducing the carbon footprint by 30-50% which can be further increased via the power saving features. This greatly supports our Green Martin strategy as it allows us to produce fixtures with less environmental impact.

Further, the plasma lamp contains much less mercury and other toxic materials than HID lamps and combining this with the extremely long plasma life, total waste of those materials will only be a fraction of HID’s.

Remember, we are not there to show a prototype of a plasma fixture but to educate about plasma technology.

Robe’s ROBIN 3 Plasma Fixture UPDATE

So, a few days ago I interviewed Tony McGettican of Luxim for the JimOnLight.com Podcast (which is almost ready, by the way), and I asked him about the LIFI lamp and if he could tell me about any partnerships or joint ventures with moving light companies.  Tony politefully declined to comment because the news of the ROBIN 3 Plasma Spot hadn’t come out yet.

However, another source has shared that the ROBIN 3 Plasma Spot actually debuted privately at LDI 2008 and PLASA 2008 – to apparently really positive reviews.  Damn, I gotta find out how to get invited to stuff like that!

Luxim LIFI-ENT-31-02 Lamp

What I have been told is that the lamp being used in the ROBIN 3 Plasma Spot is the Luxim LIFI-ENT-31-02 lamp, which is geared and designed towards entertainment lighting.  Some specs on the LIFI-ENT-31-02:

  • 17,800 lumens
  • Forward emitting intensity pattern
  • Useful lifetime more than 6X longer than HID lamps
  • High CRI of 94
  • Rugged and impact resistant
  • Small form-factor
  • Digitally controlled for fastdimming
  • Operates in all orientations

Feast Your Eyes on Robe’s LIFI Lamp Fixture – ROBIN 3 Plasma Spot

GO LIFI!  I was waiting for this day to come!

Robe used Luxim’s LIFI lamp in a moving light.  Remember LIFI?  It’s the tic tac sized HID that is electrodeless and works on RF; it’s also got a long life, collimated beam, and high CRI. I spoke with Tony McGettican the other day on the phone for an upcoming JimOnLight.com podcast, and asked him about any partnerships with moving light companies.  He wouldn’t say anything – I heard a rumor a few days before about Robe having a LIFI fixture.

Robe Launches new Robin moving light range at Prolight + Sound 2009 – 27.3.2009

Robe lighting launches it’s amazing new Robin (Robe Innovative Concept) range of moving light products at Prolight+Sound Frankfurt.

Interview with Tony McGettigan, Director and CEO of LUXIM

I recently had the pleasure of having an interview with the director and CEO of Luxim, Tony McGettigan.  Luxim is the company that has created the LIFI source – the HID source that is practically the size of a Tic Tac and puts out insane amounts of lumens.  120 lumens per Watt, to be more precise.  Luxim’s LIFI lamp also doesn’t have any electrodes – it’s fired by an RF “pump” of sorts.  People need to watch Luxim, they’re going to be huge.

The Interview:

JimOnLightWhere did Luxim find the inspiration to attack such a vital improvement in energy efficiency, color rendering, and output?  The LIFI systems being developed by Luxim are no small feat – what was the muse for the project?

Tony of Luxim:  Thanks Jim and great question.  The initial motivation was to find a long life, high color quality source for projection display systems such as business projectors and more importantly Rear Projection Televisions.  That’s where LIFI® got its start.  In fact, you may not know this, but we have over 60,000 LIFI® light sources installed in a variety of projection display products.

But, from the outset we knew that the technology had a much broader reach and we expanded into markets where color and life are critical.  Sustained R&D initiatives kept producing new efficiency breakthroughs and we soon had a technology that could compete on the basis of efficiency, life and color.

JimOnLightThis may sound like an odd question, but do people understand what Luxim has developed with LIFI?  This technology should be everywhere that HIDs are used.  How are customers and clients reacting to the introduction to such a lucrative product on the market?

Tony of Luxim:  LIFI® is increasingly being recognized as a breakthrough lighting technology.  Seeing is believing, especially when it comes to light sources.  When we show the compact package with high efficiency, excellent color and high output, people immediately understand the breakthrough and are as excited as we are about LIFI’s potential.

We are seeing very broad interest in LIFI® across several segments, including instrumentation, entertainment, architectural and outdoor lighting.  Moving forward, we expect to generate further breakthroughs in efficiency, color temperature and lumens output.  This will expand our range in the existing markets and open new market segments.

JimOnLightThe Entertainment Lighting market is a place Luxim can very sharply make a difference – you have a section of the Luxim website devoted to LIFI Entertainment products.  How has the Entertainment Lighting market been helpful, or have they been unhelpful?  I think of how absolutely product-changing a LIFI source in a DL2 projector would be, or how hardened LIFI lamps would reduce load-in time on the road in moving lighting.  Has the Entertainment market latched onto Luxim yet?

Tony of Luxim:  Entertainment lighting is a great match for our technology for several reasons.  High output from a small package is a must, color quality is critical and the ability to improve efficiency, durability and life is highly valued.  Many of these systems swap out sources every 400 hours: with LIFI® life can be extended to 10,000 hours.  Several of these systems have an overall efficacy of 15-30 LPW:  with LIFI® this can be improved to 30-45 LPW.  Improving efficiency has the added advantage of reducing fan size and noise.

So far, we’ve had a terrific response from entertainment lighting manufacturers.  The customer base has been very receptive and the industry experts have been informative and helpful.  We appreciate the enthusiasm for our technology and we look forward to working closely with the industry over the next several years.  We are confident you’ll see better products AND new types of products and architectures.

JimOnLightAre you working with any specific vendors or manufacturers for Entertainment Lighting products?  I can’t say that I have noticed Luxim’s LIFI products to be saturating the market, which is a shame considering the beauty you’ve brought to the market.  Where can I find your goods?

Tony of Luxim:  Thanks for the comments.  To put things in context, we first showed LIFI® at ProLight in 2008 and we were already in a couple of products by LDI 2008.  I can’t say too much, but keep your eyes peeled in 2009.  Longer term, our goal is to be in EVERY important entertainment lighting system by 2011.

JimOnLightA technical geek observation – I noticed on the LIFI Entertainment products site that the indensity distribution is listed as Lambertian, whereas some of the the civil works products from Luxim are listed to be distributing in a forward-emitting fashion.  How exactly does the LIFI system consider optical systems with regards to ellipsoidal and spherical reflector systems?  For the reader’s benefit, we all know Lambertian reflectance as an even distribution of intensity across a surface to all viewers.  How do the LIFI Entertainment sources achieve what seems like you’re saying is a flat field?  Lighting Designers are used to a beam/field split to deal with, how does this change?

Tony of Luxim:  When we say forward emitting, what we mean is that all the light is moving in the same direction along the optical axis.  In this sense a LIFI® source is much like an LED.  When we say Lambertian, what we mean is that the angular distribution of the emitted rays is similar to a Lambertian distribution with a peak on axis and a general inverse cosine distribution.

Two effects, intrinsic to the source, help create the flat field.  In the first place, unlike a conventional HID lamp, light does not leave the LIFI® source directly.  Instead, the light recirculates in a reflective cavity.  This recirculation broadens the spectrum and reduces brightness and color variation across the source.  These effects all help produce the uniform spot.

A second aspect relates to the collection optics design.  Traditional systems use imaging optics (elliptical, spherical reflectors).  These designs are based on a system that duplicates the spatial pattern of the source at a secondary aperture, thereby duplicating the spatial/color variation.  Because LIFI® emits in a forward pattern, different collection optic designs can be used including designs that will further homogenize color and brightness producing a more uniform disc of light at the aperture.

JimOnLightFor a client wanting to completely retrofit a touring light rig with LIFI sources – is Luxim to that point with the LIFI technology?  Is Luxim prepared for the lighting market’s mad dash to you once they realize the magic you’ve developed?

Tony of Luxim:  The products we have today can displace conventional 250-550Watt HID sources.  We are expanding the line-up to cover the full range of wattages and color temperatures used in entertainment lighting products.

With respect to readiness, we already have the global supply chain and manufacturing capacity in place to build more than 1000 units/day.  Building that infrastructure was a big priority when we first set out to supply LIFI® technology to global manufacturers of rear-projection televisions.  So we are in a very good position to satisfy initial demand. We also have a strategy that allows us to scale capacity rapidly and cost effectively.

JimOnLightWhat has the experimentation and control been like for LIFI in the, say, Automated Lighting world?  Have the LIFI lamps seen any beta testing on major market tours?  Are designers starting to ask for the LIFI system by name?

Tony of Luxim:  We test at two levels:  LIFI® testing is done by Luxim while application level testing is done at the customers’ sites.  The Luxim internal testing is extensive with 250 test beds at our Sunnyvale facility and a further 750 test beds at our contract manufacturer.  A number of customers have completed application level qualification while several more are finalizing designs and beginning qualification testing.

Suffice to say that the LIFI® brand is resonating with influential fixture manufacturers globally with key people asking specifically for LIFI® solutions by name.  This momentum is a tribute to the strength of the technology but it also tells us that there’s a need for new high-efficiency light source solutions that combine high-output, great color advantages and a longer life in a very compact package.

JimOnLight Can you give the readers an idea as to what kinds of specialty projects that Luxim might be involved with to date?  Let’s stick to basically non entertainment, non civil (street lamps, overhead illumination, etc) and focus in on medical technology and analytical lighting and products.

Tony of Luxim:  I’m glad you raised the topic of opportunities for LIFI® in medical instrumentation applications. We believe that LIFI® has great potential here.  I cannot give too much detail because of confidentiality agreements, but I can say that you will see five or six different types of medical products with integrated LIFI® solutions in 2009.  It is a great thrill for us to know our products are helping leading scientists in their research and helping physicians save lives.  Again, it speaks to the breadth and potential for LIFI® technology.

JimOnLight I appreciate you bearing with me on all of these questions.  People need to know about LIFI and Luxim!  So, what’s next for Luxim?  What’s in the future for the company, and where has R+D found itself lately?

Tony of Luxim:  We are still in our infancy and there is great potential for growth and success.  But, we want to be smart and pragmatic in how we grow our business and how we continue to innovate on the technology front.

Our main focus moving forward is efficiency.  Did you know that powering a high-output lamp generates about the same amount of Carbon Dioxide in a year as driving a family car 15,000 miles?  At the same time, the investment needed to upgrade the lamp is fifty times less than the investment needed to upgrade the car.  That potential for high-energy savings at modest investment levels creates a huge opportunity for us and it’s what galvanizes our R&D team.  Everywhere we look, we see opportunity to make things better by improving efficiency.  Efficiency reduces energy costs, simplifies infrastructure and abates climate change.  So we are all about being more efficient, without compromising the quality of the experience.

NEMO: A LIFI Color Engine

Seachanger, the color mixing engine that you attach to a Source Four ellipsoidal, has just announced that they are selling a high-output color engine that runs on a LIFI lamp.  LIFI – I blogged about this a few days ago, but it means “Light Fidelity.”  It’s a high output lamp, very efficient, and uses plasma.

Plasma.  The NEMO is 83 lumens per Watt.  EIGHTY THREE.
Did I mention 83 lumens per Watt?  NEMO outputs 15,000 lumens on a mere 180W of power.

The Seachanger NEMO, from older posts I made about the regular spot and wash units, is also the kind of unit where you attach a Source Four barrel to the device and go.  NEMO is basically an HID source (in output terms) for a Source Four – like the Mole Richardson lamp units for the Source Four.  All of the same filters and xG (extreme green) stuff come with the NEMO.

Have you heard of or seen the videos of the new “plasma” light sources that are out there?  People are talking about LIFI lamps and sources, and how many lumens per watt can be had with these new jewels.  Check out this video:

LIFI:  “Light Fidelity.”  LIFI lamps do not use a series of electrodes to attach to a filament to bring the lamp to a point where the source emits light.  Instead, a RF source is focused and pointed at a little column in the lamp, the plasma column, which then makes the lamp emit an intense, high output light.  We’re talking about having a little tiny source that can output 20K lumens.  The operating costs are significantly lower because of the technology that “plasmafies” the lamp itself, which requires a lot less electricity to operate the RF generator.

What about color rendering?  How white is the LIFI source?

LUXIM, the company who is pioneering this technology, has the following chart on their website:

Look at that first figure – 120 lumens per watt.  CRI of 80 (96 on the next model up), and 30,000 hours of operating life.  If you know about CRI and color rendering, you know that 100 is the best score, referring to a black-body radiator.  The STA-40-02 model renders at 96.

Luxim also makes LIFI lamps for entertainment purposes – one of their lamps runs at 7500°K, the other at 5600°K – both have a CRI of above 91, and both have 20,000 hours of life.  These lamps operate under 10A and run on around 28V – heat is lower, energy consumption is lower, which allows this source to be jammed into the back of a moving head without worry of overtemp.  According to Luxim, these lamps are also vibration resistant and rugged – all solid state components.
