ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS of the JimOnLight.com Fall Scholarship Contest!

I apologize for the delay folks, I’m fighting some kind of flu bug.

Now, without further dudes:

Ladies and gentlemen, the public has spoken in the JimOnLight.com Fall Scholarship Contest!  Congratulations to TEAM DULUTH, who takes first place by popular vote.  First runner up is Johanna-Mai Vihalem who is currently in Paris, and the second runner up is Daphne Mir, everyone’s favorite budding LD out of SoCal.  Congratulations to each of you who entered – each one of you is going to receive a 4Wall Entertainment t-shirt and a box of goodies from me.

Winners, I’ll be in touch shortly to get relevant information!

I’d like to take a moment to comment on and add a little surprise to the contest.  I put the donated scholarship funds and my contribution to the pool out to vote by the JimOnLight.com Community as a whole.  The JimOnLight.com readership is full of very intelligent and influential people who are all out there shaping and advancing the industries of light – researchers, designers, scientists, laser engineers, LED manufacturers and developers, production technicians, lighting directors, solid-state lighting scientists, opticians, doctors, physicists, and many other professionals read the blog each day.  The reason that JimOnLight.com is able to do anything for the community is DUE TO the investment of the community into the future of our beloved industries.  I trust the readership to choose.  Far be it for me to take seven light lovers’ videos and make a decision on whose passionate plea for light was better than any other – I got warmth from each and every video.  I am inspired by each and every one of you.  So much, in fact, that I am going to give each of you a post on JimOnLight.com for your video over the next month.

I want to add one more mention to the contest – after watching all of these videos, I felt like I needed to recognize one video for its production and creativity.  I enjoyed every one of these videos – and I plan on having more of these contests to give back to the lighting industries.  Overall, on a production aspect, I want to recognize Nik Robalino‘s video for being the most well produced.  Nik, please tell your crew that I think they did an excellent job.  I’m working on putting something special together for you and your crew.

Contest participants – I’ll be in touch shortly to get addresses and all of that so I can send you each some good stuff.  Great job to everyone – you should be ridiculously proud!  Thank you to the JimOnLight.com Community for participating.  More to come!

What A Week! How’s Everyone Doing?

I have to admit, this has been one of the busiest weeks I’ve had in a long time.  I’ve been talking to a lot of people in the business who are readying for the PLASA show in London (which I unfortunately won’t be able to make this year, alas), and for myriad shows across the world.  This is always the busiest time of year for everyone I know – now, and the entire month of October for corporate work.

What are you all doing?  Leave a comment below, let me know what you’re doing this season!  Who knows, maybe I’ll send you a free JimOnLight.com t-shirt!

JimOnLight.com Wants A Student in the World to Have $500 for Books

Books and supplies for lighting students are expensive.  Watch this video:

JimOnLight.com’s Fall 2010 Student Book Money Contest from Jim Hutchison on Vimeo.

The JimOnLight.com Fall 2010 Student Contest RULES:

  1. Make a video telling the world how you feel about the best thing ever – LIGHT!
  2. Upload the video somewhere like Youtube, Vimeo, Viddler, or somewhere else public before September 15, 2010 at midnight CST.
  3. Email Jim with the link to the video:  either jim AT jimonlight DOTCOM or jimonlight.com/contact

Guidelines:

  • There is no time limit or minimum on your video.  Make it as short or as long as you like.  Just make your case.
  • Please, no naked anything.  It doesn’t help your case, and if you make it public, you better believe people are going to see it.
  • Be nice.  The world would be so much more awesome if everyone was nice and treated each other how they’d love to be treated.
  • Light Associated Media LLC and JimOnLight.com cannot be held responsible for anything you do that upsets people.  I just want to help a student.  Don’t put me in a situation where I have to make defensive decisions.  By entering the contest with your video you agree not to act like a fool and do stupid things.
  • I make final decisions on who ultimately gets my $500.

Now go out there and make the best video about your love of light that you possibly can!

Any JimOnLight.com Readers in Phoenix? How About A JimOnLight.com Tweetup?

I’m traveling to Phoenix, Arizona today to light a convention at the PCC this next week.  As I sit here sending lighting paperwork to the server, it struck me – why not have a Phoenix Tweetup?  Are there any JimOnLight.com readers in the greater Phoenix area who might wanna get together at a bar somewhere close to the Phoenix Convention Center (as my hotel is there and I have no car) some night between June 10 and June 16?

My schedule kind of gets made that morning, maybe a day before if I’m lucky (you know, large corporate shows fluctuate, sometimes I need programming time in the evenings), so if you’re interested in getting together some night this next week, post in the comments, wouldja?  Let’s see if we can gauge the number of people and choose the venue accordingly?

I’m looking forward to meeting John Musarra out there (@jmusarra on the Twits), a stagehand in the Phoenix area.  Come on out and hang with us for the evening!  You can also send me a message through the contact form if you don’t wanna post a comment.  But posting comments is SO FUN!

Jax Steager Joins the JimOnLight.com Team – Welcome Jax!

JimOnLight.com is growing so fast.  SO fast.  I have my irons in so many fires right now that most days I think the world is exploding!  We still have two more monster projects to roll out before the Fall, so life will get even more interesting here very, very soon.

People at conferences are talking – and they’re saying incredible things about the website.  At NAB, I overheard someone say that JimOnLight.com is “the number one lighting industry go-to resource,” and at LightFair this year, in addition to being warmly welcomed by everyone I talked to, I was told that the JimOnLight.com Community is one to be respected and trusted.  You folks are the best thing about this website – your desire to learn and to read about things that are going on is amazing, incredible, and outstanding!  Thanks for making this place the most awesome place!

To make sure that my head doesn’t asplode anymore, I have asked Jax Steager (@batfishlighting on Twitter) to come on board and act as my Executive Assistant.  Jax will be appearing on the website from time to time, she’ll be commanding some other stuff, and she’ll become a welcome face on the site.  Make sure that everyone welcomes Jax with open arms to our awesome community!

Everyone, on 3:

WELCOME, JAX!

Sunday JimOnLight.com Flickr Pool
