El Molino Burlesque’s Beautiful Video Facade — Barcelona, Spain

I was in Barcelona back in November of 2012; I posted some photos of that very busy trip, but I didn’t really have time to go out and do some sightseeing because of the show schedule.

There is one thing I did get though, I filmed it on the last night I was there.  We were staying at a hotel called Hotel Barcelona Universal, and from my room, I had a great view across the Paral Lel, the street out in front.  Across the street was this beautiful building facade, all made of video, that had a big windmill attached to the front of it.  The name?  El Molino, or “the Mill.”   Check it out:

Not really much to look at from the outside, right?  I mean, it’s fun and all, and obviously there is something happening of fun inside of the building.  However, El Molino has an enormous video wall outside that is pretty beautiful, and there is some very fun content that is displayed on the video wall.  It’s huge in comparison of the other parts of the facade!

This building underwent a major renovation after a 1997 closing of the theatre, which from what I found was the first time it was ever actually closed.  The venue has a pretty interesting history; from the El Molino website, translated from Catalan:

The story of the Mill began in 1898, when the owner of the task The Aviary, a modest cabin located in Vila Vila Rosal corner, sold his business to 100 pesetas. The new owner will change its name to The Aviary Catalan and mount a small empostissat. After three years with a musical program stable, the local had already found its place in the world of entertainment Parallel.

After a brief flirtation with the movies under the name Grand Salon Siglo XX, in 1908 there was another change of owner and renamed Petit Moulin Rouge, in imitation of the famous Moulin Rouge in the Montmartre district of Paris.The new business is designed to bring the nightly entertainment cabarets of Paris “in Spanish”. It is the time of the Music Hall, which appropriates the same time, he sees as his fame avenue that the highest number of shows in Europe grows.

So the entire point of this post was to show the video I recorded of the video content of the video wall outside of El Molino.  Check it out, this is some fun architainment!

EIBTM 2012 – Lighting Designers, JUMP ON THIS

I just got back last week from Barcelona, Spain – I was over at EIBTM 2012 for CAST; we’re exhibiting the Vivien suite and showed some wysiwyg to some folks.  In this respect, that’s unimportant.  What is important is the fact that I have never been to a show where there was such a potential for lighting design greatness than I have when I saw the show floor at EIBTM.

First – this show is absolutely jam packed and crazy.  Good crazy, mind you — this is a large show completely filling the Fira Gran Via Barcelona, which is a big, beautiful hall:

There are stand after stand of countries marketing to Event and Meeting Professionals and hoteliers and all kinds of really corporate stuff — 5-star hotel chains showing their best properties, city and country travel and tourism bureaus hocking their destinations as the “in” place to come for a particular event/meeting/what-have-you, and there is a lot of really tremendous design there — glass and wood, real plants, just and amazing display of crafstmanship.  Even our stand, a 10X20 over in the Technology Pavilion, had puttied and painted corners and generally looked sleek and nice.  There was one thing missing from most of these displays, and there were some magnificently enormous displays…

…the touch of a Lighting Designer.

There is amazing opportunity here, people — perhaps it’s time to start putting together some proposals and sending out some resumes, yeah?  Even though this is not (I repeat not) a lighting trade show by any stretch of the imagination, some of these countries’ displays could really benefit from the touch of a lighting designer.  Countries like Estonia, my favorite stand even though not the largest, could really benefit from some nice programming and sequencing to best fit their country’s appearance.  There is something so elegant about having the calculated eye of an LD to put some real pizzazz into something so important as hundreds of millions of dollars of potential revenue, if not exponentials of that figure.

This is not to say that they didn’t have the services of a lighting designer, but to me it did not appear as though an LD had given a lot of input other than GI (general illumination) in many of these cases.  Also keep in mind I’m a critical bastard who looks intensely at these things, and from a different perspective than any one of the attendees of this show — it’s just not what the show is about at all, it’s about destinations, events, meetings, and all of the revenue that goes along with that industry.  BUT, to the right LD, one of these stands could be a playground of immense proportions!

Oh yeah, and Barcelona!  It was my first time in Spain, but I have to report that I only got to enjoy one really great meal and a bunch of hotel and convention floor food, I had the show on top of a beta program going on and writing documentation for said release.  I got a lot of cell phone shots of various locations around Barcelona, but I was busy from sun-up to sundown and didn’t really get much of a chance to enjoy Barcelona.  Sorry, Barcelona!  Maybe next time!  My Dad says you’re pretty cool, though.  La Barca del Salamanca is one awesome awesome awesome restaurant in Olympic Village along the water in Barcelona, there are some shots in the gallery of the amazing meal we had there with Corbin Ball!  Thanks Corbin, I had a blast!

This image below was so awesome – this was a stone statue of a woman and child that was sitting by the Fira Gran Via loading dock entrance.  It’s obviously very old, but it was just so excellent to see this stone woman standing guard with her child over the loading dock.  I love stuff like that.

JOL Sunday Flickr

it’s another Sunday, everyone!  I’m in Stamford, Connecticut this week for PLASA Focus Stamford, one of the smaller PLASA shows that are gaining a lot of popularity.  I have to admit that these PLASA Focus shows are pretty awesome — smaller booths, smaller rooms, and the knowledge of the people attending that a manufacturer or lighting company can’t hide behind their huge LDI-sized booths at these smaller shows.  Things are right out in the open, and we as lighting technology and equipment makers are under a tighter scrutiny to perform without the glitz and flare.  I absolutely love it.  It’s like putting up or shutting up for two solid days.

Interactive LightBoxes from Enlighter and Light Act

I got an email a little while ago from Mitja Prelovšek who runs the lighting website Enlighter.  (Sorry I haven’t posted this yet Mitja, I’m in just released software land!)  Enlighter did a project recently with interactive product called Light Act, which is pretty cool — imagine tracking a person as they walk past a store front, and allowing the lighting to literally interact with them as they realize they’re being entertained.  Now that is what I call outstanding!  I thought sticking a large pixellated box in front of a video display was pretty creative, this kinda just blew my mind and made me have a morning period of creativity!

Interactive LightBoxes is an interactive lighting installation using 1 reActor and 2 SmartView modules from LightAct system. These modules control 6 light boxes that through the interactivity draw people closer and invite them to interact and play with them. The message displayed on the light boxes gets across much more easily while the interactivity helps to save energy.

This is outstanding, and it’s not really that complicated!

The system itself is a motion tracking-type system that has some extra translators for lighting protocols other than DMX (like DALI for architecture and any pulse-width modulation signal stuff for homes and buildings), along with a software suite that allows you to either write your own code or use the software to set up your “interactivity barriers” as we would call them.  Check out a diagram of the system — opens up to 1024 pixels!

PLASA 2012: Pick Up Your Face, It’s Over

Now that I’m back in North America AND I am all but caught up with sleep, I want to share some of my photos from the fun that was PLASA 2012 at Earl’s Court, right off the Earl’s Court tube stop and only a moment’s tube ride from a great Indian restaurant that really ended up hating about ten of us after a wild night of eating some delicious tandoori.  WHEW — that was a huge sentence!

It was a pretty busy show for me and for the CAST Group booth (Hall 1, E-27), but the load-in went smoothly, Steve and his guys from Intexco took really good care of us, and a big thanks to Mickey, Shane, and Paul for making our booth look outstanding!  I even got some carpenters to run cable and hang lighting fixtures!  Brilliant work, boys, and thanks again!

Tupac Martir’s Satore Studio is About to Rock Your Face

There are a very small group of people who live in our society who see things in the way that we all see things in our heads, but have the ability to take those brilliant, beautiful twilight thoughts and make them real for all to experience.  These people have the ability inside them to transform a location with art and light completely, or tell a story so vivid and so real that the lines between the production they design and the experience the audience has are blurred beyond reality.  My friend Ann Davis is one of those artists, Peter Morse and Jeff Waful are too; TJ Gerckens is one of those artists, as is Martin Kuhn from Moodbox in Switzerland.

This post is about one of those kinds of artists – the kind of person who sees a different color at night than most.  This post is about Tupac Martir of Satore Studio — so, JimOnLight readers, meet Tupac Martir — in this instance talking about one of his works, Nierka:

It’s a rare occurrence when you meet someone whose ideas are so revolutionary, so different from mainstream thinking that they produce mainstream thinking.  It’s something that we all strive for, but you either have that talent or you do not have that talent.  No matter how much you pay on Yale, sometimes you just don’t have it.  Tupac has this talent; it always frankly just blows my mind when we talk about the projects he’s doing and the work that his firm is plotting.  An example of this would be one of his recent works, Nierka.  Or, if you happened to be at Coachella Music Festival this season back in April 2011, you would have seen Tupac’s work as well (in collaboration with another outstanding design firm, United Visual Artists):

Tupac does all kinds of design work with his firm all over the world.  His touch extends to artists like Beyonce, Elton John, Sting, Jon Bon Jovi — and to the fashion world, bringing his intimate knowledge of lighting to create overwhelmingly beautiful runway events during Fashion Week for designers from Vivienne Westwood to Alexander McQueen and everything in between.  Designers like Tupac Martir (in a small pool of creative visionaries of our day like Neil Austin, Ann Davis, definitely Kevin Adams) are what I see as the next round of Appia and Craig in our society — in other words, these are the kinds of people to bring about the next big change to the way we think about certain things in our lives.  And, if not everyone will see and experience these changes, at least those of us who see their works, experience their art, and perhaps get lucky enough to collaborate on a project can have that realization that comes with seeing the work of a committed visionary.  You have to get it how and while you can get it, right?  I mean, “eh?”

I met Tupac because Nierka is using the BlackTrax technology from CAST.  We met at the ProLight + Sound Show in Frankfurt, and became fast friends.  It’s the whole “brother from another mother” thing that happens in the Universe, you know how it goes.  The man has creativity falling out of his beard; it’s hard to tie it down to one or two brilliant things.  I recently gave a seminar at PLASA 2012 with Tupac on using the wysiwyg suite to solve production problems, and I’ll share some of that seminar soon — but it was a pleasure to share the stage with an artist who is as proficient technically as they are artistically.  That’s right — Satore Studio is known for having f%$#ing amazing production paperwork.  I’M IN LOVE!  Stage Managers across the world unite — an artist CAN have excellent paperwork AND create great designs!

55,000 LEDs Make A Cathedral

Jeff Waful initially posted this on Twitter from Colossal Design, but I can’t not repost.  This thing is spectacular, even the pictures make it look like it was a spiritual sight.

First, check out this quick video of the cathedral – this entire thing was for the 2012 Lichtfestival in Ghent, Belgium.  The cathedral kinda stole the show, dontchathink?

That thing is UNBELIEVABLE!

So Jeff sent me this yesterday.  I then promptly stood up, stretched my legs and arms, and tried to kick myself right in the ass for missing the opportunity to see this happen live.  DAMN YOU, REAL LIFE!
